Reunion with a Classmate After 30 Years

Catching Up on Memories and Recent Life Updates

The other day, I had lunch with a former classmate whom I hadn’t seen in nearly 30 years. Our reunion, after all those years, was filled with nostalgic stories from the past.

Current Concerns

Unlike our student days 30 years ago, we now both have families and jobs, and with them come various concerns and challenges. Toward the end of our conversation, we began sharing our current issues and struggles.

The Synergy of Zero-Second Thinking and chatGPT

Digging Deep with chatGPT

After hearing my friend’s stories, I had the idea of using chatGPT, my personal favorite tool since last year. My friend had never used chatGPT before, so I was eager to show its benefits.

With the mobile app version of chatGPT, I could use voice input, making it easy to enter information even in a café. I tried using voice input to convey my friend’s concerns.

Here’s how we started:

“Let’s discuss my concern, and please help me come up with solutions. Also, feel free to ask for any necessary information for generating solutions. My concern is… (text omitted).”

Then, chatGPT began responding with questions.

Key Points of chatGPT’s Questions

chatGPT focused on three key points:

  1. Comparison of benefits
  2. Work environment and sense of fulfillment
  3. Future outlook

Seeing these questions, my friend nodded in agreement, realizing that chatGPT had hit some core issues.

Answering chatGPT’s Questions with Zero-Second Thinking

Next, we tried using Zero-Second Thinking. Using the three key points from chatGPT (benefits comparison, work environment and fulfillment, future outlook) as themes, I asked my friend to jot down thoughts on memo paper within a 1-minute limit for each point.

By writing things down, vague concerns became clearer, and my friend said, “I feel refreshed!” Clarifying the issues helped them connect to actionable steps.

What is Zero-Second Thinking?

Yuji Akabane’s “Zero-Second Thinking” is a method to quickly organize thoughts and move into action. It’s especially useful in times of stress or when you’re facing complex issues. The essence is to write out thoughts on paper with a pen. Here’s how it works:

  • Use A4-sized paper and write down your main thought topic.
  • For that theme, write down everything that comes to mind within 1 minute.

For example, if your theme is “reviewing study methods,” you could write down new ideas, things that concern you, or areas you want to improve—all within one minute. This method helps clarify your cluttered thoughts and makes it clear what needs to be done.

Conclusion: The Synergy Between chatGPT and Zero-Second Thinking

Using chatGPT isn’t just about discussing problems or background information. You can request, “Please help me think of solutions,” or “Ask questions as needed to find a solution.” Doing so leads to insightful questions.

Answering these questions may seem like a chore for some people, but taking pen and paper and answering them with Zero-Second Thinking drives further exploration toward solutions. This method of verbalizing within a 1-minute limit can be the best time-efficient solution!

Until now, I primarily used chatGPT and Zero-Second Thinking for work, but this experience made me realize how valuable they can be in everyday life as well.
